History of D’Aguilar

The town is named after Major General Sir George D'Aguilar, a military officer who wrote the army textbook "Regulations and Punishments of the British Army". The mountain range in which the town is situated is also named after Sir George D'Aguilar. In 1827, Sir Thomas Mitchell named the range after Sir George D'Aguilar, who was known personally to Governor Lieutenant General Ralph Darling, Captain Patrick Logan, and Major Mitchell. It is unclear which of the three suggested the name.

The D'Aguilar Range holds significant cultural value for First Nations people, as it provides food, medicine, and resources. The area was initially cleared for farming by European settlers in the 1840s, and giant red cedar and hoop pine trees were used for timber to build houses in Brisbane. Gold prospectors also tried their luck in the area in the 1860s, but the mines were abandoned in the 1950s. In 1918, timber reserves were established, and national parks were declared in the following years. In 1977, a partnership was formed to protect the bushland area, leading to the declaration of D'Aguilar National Park in 2009.
